Full-time or Part-time

Gain valuable hands-on agricultural training with this practical entry-level qualification. Tasmania has a strong reputation for producing quality food and fibre and there is high demand for our produce, so if you are enthusiastic, hardworking and love working outdoors… this could be the course for you!

Summary

Providing a general introduction to the Agricultural industry, this course will enable you to select a livestock production or cropping job focus or, in the case of mixed farming enterprises, both cropping and livestock.

You’ll learn a wide range of basic farming skills including safe work practices, handling and care of livestock, using farm machinery and equipment and how to establish, maintain and harvest crops. You’ll also learn how to work effectively in the industry by participating in environmentally sustainable work practices and work, health and safety processes.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for you to participate in hands-on industry project work and go on industry excursions so that you can gain a broader understanding of the agriculture sector and future employment opportunities.

This course is offered as an on-campus program at Freer Farm, Burnie Campus, and is delivered over two days per week from 2 February through to 24 November.

This course is also available to new and existing workers within the agriculture industry. If completing as an apprentice/trainee or workplace-based learner, your training will consist of a combination of on-the-job training, off-the-job workshops and self-paced study.

You can achieve this qualification as an apprentice or trainee – which requires an employment arrangement and training contract – or as a workplace-based student. Both these options include a combination of on-the-job training, off-the-job workshops and self-paced study.

On successful completion of this course, you will have the skills you need to progress your career as a Farmhand or Stockperson in a wide range of agricultural roles. You may also consider undertaking further study in a related field at TasTAFE including AHC30122 Certificate III in Agriculture, AHC30224 Certificate III in Dairy Production, or AHC40122 Certificate IV in Agriculture
