Firearms Safety Courses are conducted to determine the competency of applicants for Firearms Licences, and will assist you to meet the requirements for obtaining a Firearms Licence in Tasmania. Training can be undertaken across firearms categories A, B, C, D and H.

Summary

To enrol in this course, you must have written approval from Tasmania Police. You may only enrol in the category of firearms course for which Tasmania Police approval has been given.

Please arrive at 8.15 am for 8.30 am start. Course includes theory in the morning, followed by practical training and assessment on a Tasmania Police-approved shooting range.

In the classroom, you will learn about the legislation that applies to firearms ownership and use in Tasmania, the different types of firearms and ammunition you may encounter, and the safety rules associated with shooting. You’ll also learn about the practical aspects of using firearms safely and your obligations and responsibilities to community safety awareness, including legal and social responsibilities, the circumstances and consequences of firearms misuse, and ethics and assistance.

For the practical part of the course, you will go to a Tasmania Police-approved shooting range where you will learn how to carry firearms safely, how to load and unload different types of firearms, how to safely store and transport your firearms, and how to use different categories of firearms safely.

On successful completion of this course, you will be provided a Statement of Results confirming that you have fulfilled the requirements for training in the particular categories of firearms for which you have applied. Tasmania Police Firearms Services will also be advised so that they can proceed with the next stage to issue you with your Firearms Licence.
